Research Lines

Research Line I – Infrastructure and Urban Technology

It constitutes the technical-experimental approach to urban issues, aiming to analyze the evolution of urban structures, including infrastructure networks and the technologies used.

Within this Research Line, the focus is on studying and analyzing cities and their buildings as consequences of transformations—whether planned and/or designed, natural and/or spontaneous. To achieve these objectives, emphasis is placed on the engineering elements that shape urban areas, from the design phase and the study of alternative materials to reduce costs, through the implementation phase, and finally, the evaluation.

A technological approach is employed in the construction of the urban environment as a physical structure that supports and facilitates the daily interactions between the population and the environment.

Research Line II – Planning and Management of Urban Systems

In a broad sense, this is the Research Line that addresses the management problems of urban resources, particularly in medium and small cities, which are characteristic of the region where this Graduate program is based.

Within a didactic-pedagogical classification, the urban systems addressed here include sanitation, transportation, and their interrelations with public urban spaces. The goal is to analyze the planning of the urban road system, considering aspects of land use and the environment, through traffic and transportation operations, integrating road planning and management techniques with studies on infrastructure and urban pavement management. The aim is to assess the influence and impacts of the urban road system and its components on the urban fabric.

Furthermore, this research line aims to cover studies related to water resource planning and sanitation systems in the urban environment, combining the characteristics of wastewater treatment and solid waste management with physical environmental variables.

To complete the study of urban management systems, research also includes urban design and planning, along with public green spaces, urban circulation routes, and their interrelations, aiming to improve quality of life.
